Feasibility Sprint

Can this work, and what would it take?

A fixed-scope, fixed-price, fixed-deadline study of one technical question, ending in a written go/no-go verdict with the evidence to reproduce it.

10 working daysFrom €8,500, fixed once scopedRemoteNDA first

Who it is for

  • Founders with a technical claim at the centre of the business and no independent physicist who has looked at it.
  • Teams deciding whether to fund a prototype, a pilot or a hire, where the answer rests on physics, a model or code.
  • Companies preparing a grant file or a data room who need the core claim to survive an expert's questions.
  • Consultancies that need a defensible technical answer for a client, delivered under their own brand.

Who it is not for

  • Questions that can only be settled on a bench. I will say so, and point you to a laboratory partner.
  • Market sizing, business plans or regulatory strategy. Those are different trades.
  • Anyone who needs the answer to be yes. The report says what the evidence says.
  • Work that is really a build: if what you need is engineering capacity, the fractional offer fits better.
What you receive

One report, eight parts, nothing you cannot check.

  1. The question and the decision it informs

Written in one paragraph and agreed before work starts, so the verdict answers what you actually need to decide.

  2. Evidence reviewed

Papers, patents, datasheets, standards and your own data, listed so an evaluator can see what the verdict rests on.

  3. Methods

First-principles analysis, simulation, code review or re-analysis of data, and the checks each method was put through before being trusted.

  4. Findings

What the evidence shows, with the numbers, and where the evidence is thin.

  5. The verdict

Go, go with conditions, or no-go. Conditions are spelled out as measurable statements, not adjectives.

  6. Risk register

Each technical risk ranked by severity and likelihood, with what would settle it.

  7. Next experiments

The measurements or tests to run next, in order, with what each one would prove and a rough cost.

  8. Reproducibility package

The scripts, inputs and a run guide, so you or anyone you choose can reproduce every figure in the report.

1 · Question and decision

Can the proposed passive cooling coating reach the claimed 8 °C sub-ambient surface temperature under the client's deployment conditions (humid coastal site, 40 % average cloud cover)? The decision this informs: whether to fund a 50 m² pilot installation in Q1.

2 · Evidence reviewed

Two supplier datasheets, the client's emissivity measurements (3 samples, FTIR, 2.5–25 µm), twelve peer-reviewed papers on daytime radiative cooling, hourly weather data for the site (3 years).

3 · Method

Radiative balance model built from first principles and reproduced against two published results before use; sensitivity sweep over humidity, cloud cover and wind; spectral data checked for the atmospheric window.

4 · Verdict

Go, with conditionsThe 8 °C figure holds only on clear, dry nights. Under the site's measured conditions the model gives 2.5–4 °C sub-ambient in daytime. The pilot is worth funding if the business case survives at 3 °C.

5 · Risk register

RiskSeverityLikelihoodWhat would settle it
Humidity closes the atmospheric windowHighLikelyOne month of on-site surface temperature logging
Emissivity drops with soilingMediumPossibleRe-measure samples after 8 weeks outdoors
Supplier spectral data overstates the 8–13 µm bandMediumPossibleIndependent FTIR on supplier-grade sample

6 · Next experiments

Log surface and ambient temperature on one coated and one uncoated panel for 30 days before committing to the 50 m² pilot. Estimated cost of the test is a small fraction of the pilot.

7 · Reproducibility package

  • model/radiative_balance.py · inputs/site_weather_2023_2025.csv · inputs/emissivity_samples.csv
  • run.md · reproduces every figure in this report in under a minute on a laptop
Process

Ten working days, one gate at a time.

  1. Scoping call, NDA, fixed quote

Twenty minutes to define the question and the decision; I send the scope and the price the same day.

    Day 0

  2. Library

Evidence gathered into the project library; I confirm with you that nothing relevant is missing.

    Days 1–2

  3. Analysis

Agents run the literature synthesis, calculations and simulations; I verify each step and send back what does not hold.

    Days 3–7

  4. Verdict gate and draft

The draft report and the reproducibility package go through a final check against the question.

    Day 8

  5. Your review

You read the draft and we talk through anything you dispute.

    Day 9

  6. Final report and walkthrough

The final report, the package and a 45-minute walkthrough with your team.

    Day 10

Price and terms

From €8,500, fixed once scoped.

The fine print, up front

  • The price is fixed on the scoping call and does not change unless you change the question.
  • Invoiced 70 % at kick-off and 30 % on delivery. The balance is due whatever the verdict says.
  • If the scoping call shows the question cannot be settled in a sprint, I tell you before you pay anything.
  • One revision round is included. If new evidence changes the verdict, the report changes with it.
  • A Red-Flag Read fee is credited in full against a sprint started within 30 days; a sprint fee is credited against the first month of a retainer started within 30 days.
  • You own the report and the package. My background tools and methods stay mine and are licensed to you for the engagement.
  • I promise reasonable skill and care, not a particular outcome; liability is capped at the fees paid.

When the question is clear and the clock is short, a three-day Red-Flag Read (€900) tells you whether a sprint is worth it.

Why me

A named physicist, not a PhD-level team.

Doctorate from CEA-Leti and Université Grenoble Alpes, invited speaker at the MOS-AK workshop, peer reviewer for Solid-State Electronics, thirteen completed client missions across physics, engineering, finance and AI. I have no prototype to sell you afterwards, so the verdict has no thumb on the scale.

Confidential · Magnetic separation

A magnet design shown to miss its target before a prototype was built.

  • Bare-magnet baseline computed at 0.470 T against 0.472 T analytical, confirmed by the client's own team.
  • A reluctance-network upper bound put the best-case field at 1.149 T, below the 1.2 T the design needed.
  • Phase delivered in four hours as a written report plus the Python script that reproduces every number.

Does not clear target Redesign directions flagged for the next phase.

Confidential · Quantitative finance

A trading strategy stopped before it risked real capital.

  • Automated forex strategy built on triangular mispricing, tested on historical broker data and then forward-tested live on a demo account.
  • The corrected backtest showed an edge too small to justify deploying real money.
  • The client stopped at that point, with the evidence in hand, instead of funding a live account.

No-go Verdict delivered with the backtest code.

Questions

Sprint questions.

What if my question is too big for ten days?

Then I say so on the scoping call and propose either a narrower question that can be settled in a sprint, or a two-sprint plan with a gate between them. You pay nothing until the scope is agreed.

Do you need my raw data?

Only what the question requires, and only after the NDA. Many sprints run on datasheets, published results and a first-principles model. When your data is the evidence, it is handled under the data-handling terms we agree on the call.

What if I disagree with the verdict?

The reproducibility package exists for this reason. Run the scripts, change the assumptions you dispute, and we discuss the result on the walkthrough call. One revision round is included; if the evidence changes the verdict, the report changes with it.

Can the sprint feed a grant application or a data room?

Yes. The report is written so that it can be placed in front of an evaluator or an investment committee as it is. Many clients use the risk register and the next-experiments section directly in their plans.

Start with one question.

Send a short description of the technology and the decision it informs. I reply personally, usually within one working day, and a first call is twenty minutes with no commitment on either side.
