Technical Due Diligence

Technical due diligence for deep tech deals.

An independent read of the core technology before you invest, from a physicist with no build contract to win and nothing to sell the company afterwards.

Who it is for

  • Seed and Series A funds, angel syndicates and family offices looking at a company whose value rests on a technical claim.
  • Technology-transfer offices, accelerators and public investors who need an outside opinion on a technology they are about to back.
  • Corporate venture teams weighing a partnership or a pilot with a deep tech supplier.
  • Founders who want their own claims stress-tested before the data room opens, delivered as an investor-grade evidence pack.

Who it is not for

  • Financial, legal or commercial diligence. I cover the technology and the evidence behind it.
  • Opinions on valuation. The memo tells you what is true and what is risky, not what to pay.
  • Claims that only a bench test can settle. I say which ones those are and what the test would cost.
Independence

The verdict has no thumb on the scale.

Most technical opinions in a deal come from parties with an interest in it: the founders, their advisors, or a studio that would like to build the product next. I have no engineering contract to win from the company and no stake in the round. The memo is paid for by you, written for you, and says what the evidence says.

Everything in it is traceable. Each red flag names the claim, the evidence it was checked against and what would close the gap, and the reproducibility appendix lets your own technical advisor rerun the checks.

What the memo contains

Written the way an investment committee reads.

  1. One-page verdict

Where the technology stands, the three things that matter most, and whether the technical risk is priced into the deal.

  2. Claim-by-claim check

Each technical claim in the deck and data room, with the evidence for and against it and a confidence rating.

  3. Readiness position

Technology readiness level, stated with the evidence that supports it rather than the level the deck asserts.

  4. Red flags, ranked

Severity, likelihood, and what it would take to close each one.

  5. Questions for the founders

The questions I would ask, in order, and what a good answer looks like.

  6. Reproducibility appendix

Scripts and inputs for every calculation in the memo.

Process

On your deal clock.

  1. Call, NDA, data-room access

We agree the scope and which claims matter most to the decision.

    Day 0

  2. Red-Flag Read

A first written read of the deck and technical file: where the claims are weak and what I would check first. This can stand alone when the clock is short.

    Days 1–3

  3. Deep check

Claims verified against physics, prior art and the data; calculations and code rerun where the company provides them.

    Days 4–8

  4. Founder session

A one-hour technical session with the team, if you want one, with your questions and mine.

    Day 9

  5. Memo and briefing

The memo, the appendix and a 30-minute briefing for your partners.

    Day 10

Price and terms

From €12,000 per deal.

The fine print, up front

  • The price is fixed on the call, based on how many claims need checking and whether code or data has to be rerun.
  • A three-day Red-Flag Read is €900 and is credited in full against a memo started within 30 days.
  • Invoiced 70 % at kick-off and 30 % on delivery, whatever the memo concludes.
  • Funds, syndicates and accelerators that see deals regularly can retain me per deal or per day.
  • Conflicts are declared before I accept: I will not review a company I have worked for or a direct competitor of one.
  • I promise reasonable skill and care, not a particular outcome; liability is capped at the fees paid.
For consultancies

The physicist your team does not have, under your brand.

Innovation, grant and R&D tax-credit consultancies meet technical questions their own teams cannot settle: a client's claim to check before a proposal goes in, a technical file that has to survive an audit, an evaluator's objection to answer. I deliver the verification white-label, under your NDA and your name, with the same written verdict and reproducibility package. Overflow capacity when you need it, no retainer required.

Ask about per-file pricing for technical feasibility annexes and R&D tax-credit technical files.

Why me

A verdict that stopped a deployment, with the code to prove it.

Confidential · Quantitative finance

A trading strategy stopped before it risked real capital.

  • Automated forex strategy built on triangular mispricing, tested on historical broker data and then forward-tested live on a demo account.
  • The corrected backtest showed an edge too small to justify deploying real money.
  • The client stopped at that point, with the evidence in hand, instead of funding a live account.

No-go Verdict delivered with the backtest code.

Confidential · Magnetic separation

A magnet design shown to miss its target before a prototype was built.

  • Bare-magnet baseline computed at 0.470 T against 0.472 T analytical, confirmed by the client's own team.
  • A reluctance-network upper bound put the best-case field at 1.149 T, below the 1.2 T the design needed.
  • Phase delivered in four hours as a written report plus the Python script that reproduces every number.

Does not clear target Redesign directions flagged for the next phase.

Questions

Diligence questions.

Can you work inside our deal timeline?

A Red-Flag Read takes three working days from data access and is often enough to decide whether to proceed. A full memo takes ten. If the clock is shorter than that, say so on the call and we agree what can be settled in the time available.

Will you talk to the founders?

If you want me to. A one-hour technical session with the founding team, with your questions and mine, is included in the full memo. Some funds prefer the memo to be written from the data room alone; both work.

What if the technology is outside your field?

I say so on the first call and either decline or bring in a vetted specialist for the part I cannot verify, with your agreement, under the same NDA. I do not stretch.

Can we retain you across several deals?

Yes. Funds, syndicates and accelerators that see technical deals regularly can retain me on a per-deal or per-day basis; the arrangement is agreed on the call.

Start with one question.

Send a short description of the technology and the decision it informs. I reply personally, usually within one working day, and a first call is twenty minutes with no commitment on either side.
